Why Women Entrepreneurs are On the Rise - Making Lemonade

There are more women starting businesses than ever before. This movement is exciting!

I have been wanting to write this post for quite some time. This subject is so dear to me because I’m a female entrepreneur and I love that this movement is growing so quickly.

Most of us have seen this change taking place and I gotta say, I’m lovin’ it!

Before we dive into the “why”, let’s look at the facts.

FACT #1 – Over 50% Of Women Work

According to the United States Department of Labor, almost 60% of women over the age of 16 work. Right now women comprise almost half the workforce and it’s projected that this percentage will continue to increase.

In fact, by 2018 it’s projected that women will make up over 50% of the entire workforce.

This shift may not look big on numbers quite yet but it will because this means more dads are staying at home with the kids. Which brings me to my next fact.

FACT #2 – More Men Are Staying Home

As more women are focusing on their careers and businesses, more men are switching gears and staying home to look after the little ones.

In a 2014 census posted by the Huffington Post, 6% of men are Stay-at-Home dads. This is a huge, monumental leap from the 6 men that stayed at home in 1970. Yes, 6 men total.

The 6% of men we’re seeing now is about 1.9 million.

I don’t know about you but this growth is pretty crazy!

FACT #3 – Women-Owned Businesses Are Skyrocketing!

In an article posted by The Atlantic last year, talks about the growing number of women-owned businesses.

Like this fun fact about how women almost make up 30% of American businesses.

Boom! High-five, ladies!

As a business owner myself, I am in love with this growing community.

So Why Is This Happening? Why Is It Important?

Well, personally, I’m an entrepreneur at heart. I’ve been keeping a business journal since I was in high school.

Maybe the same is true for you?

I believe women have always had an entrepreneurial spirit.

Today women have more freedoms and choices than we had in the past. And with the current economy, many of us also require two incomes more than ever!

After becoming a mommy, I struggled with the question, ‘Should I stay home with my kids or should I work’. Most of us moms have experienced this struggle.

I had to figure out what I wanted out of life.

Sure, some families consider finances, and we did too. But when it came down to it, I wasn’t built to stay at home. I didn’t like it at all.

I truly envy the women who can do this and raise a family and keep their sanity. More power to them.

That’s not me.

The moment my son turned 18 months, I put him in a Mother’s Day Out Program to give me some time to myself and my work.

Now, my daughter is approaching that age and I’m counting it down.

This isn’t to say I don’t love or want to spend time with my kids. I do! Trust me, I am so unbelievably in love with my kiddos.

Have you seen my Facebook or Instagram? I’m obsessed with them.

Having a career or a business does not mean I love my kids less than a stay-at-home mom. This means we’re just two different women with different goals in life.

Although I want to be a business woman, I also want to have a work-life balance.

It’s important for me and the life of my family to have a balance between my business and my family.

If you’re reading this, I’m willing to bet you feel this way too!

As a mom entrepreneur, I’m able to “have my cake and eat it too.”

I’ve been able to keep my kids home with me until they’re almost two while still working and running a successful business.

Social media has helped provide me with support groups and surround myself with a community of women who are amazing moms and hard-working business owners, as well.

So if there’s a dream you want to live out or an idea you have just pushing you to create, I have one piece of advice.

Listen to that urge and do it!

You’re awesome and I fully believe in you!

One piece of unsolicited advice… join a community that’s going to help you grow and change for the better.
